Make Sure the CD Disk Is Clean .
If When You Have Cleaned The Disk It Still Does Not Work You May Need To Clean The Laser In The CD Drive.
You Can Do This With A Laser Disk Cleaner You Can Pick Them Up For A Couple Of Pounds. If It Will Still Not Read The CD You Will Need To Replace The CD Drive.

When you open up 'My Computer' do you actually see an icon for your CD/DVD drive. If not, this probably means your driver has become corrupted. You'll need to reinstall Windows on top of itself to rectify this.

If you do see an icon, further to cleaning the CD/DVD disc itself, you may need to purchase a lens head cleaner. This comes with a solvent that you apply to one of the brushes on the face of the CD. Run it, and this will hopefully clean the lens of any debris.

If it will not read "any" disc - Go to 'control panel' + 'system' + 'hardware' + 'device manager' and see if there is a yellow exclamation point next to the CD-ROM drive. If so, reload the drivers. Other than that you may have a loose cable that requires going into the case to fix. If this doesn't solve your problem, you probably have a fried drive.

I completely agree with PC. He is correct.... My husband and I had that issue before and we came to the conclusion (after formatting cause we had other issues) that something we had on there messed it up because after formatting, they worked. Now, it could be scratched/dirty disks, it could be needing a driver update, or it could just need the lazer cleaned. We tried that actually as well, and it worked wonders for various things of ours. We picked up one by Memorex at Walmart for like $8(CDN) and it's been in both our computers, cd players, dvd players, as well as game machines (xbox and ps2).

If those things don't work, then I would be tempted to say it's toast... but the good thing is, they're not overly expensive... unless you have like no cash, then I totally understand cause that's how my husband and I have been for a while; little money so we've tried the cheaper ways to fix things, and we've lucked out on them.

Hope this helps some... Good luck.

I had the same problem with my old PC. I tried everything, and anything, but couldn't get it to work.

So I went and bought a new one, and fitted it myself. It's actually really easy. Just make sure you plug each lead into the new drive as you remove them. Once installed, just start your PC, and it will guide you through the rest.

You can get good value ones here.

wash the cd with soap and then clean it with the cloth that we use to clean spects. this should definitely work. trust me .
you may think its weird but it works, i did it so many times.
p.s. i promise 'there will be no damage to your cd.' it should be completely dry while inserting in cd drive.
