manmade pond is 5-6ft in length, 6-8 inches deep. it is a pro. landscaped garden pond which is lined. there is a fountain w/ a filter on the base working. There r plants around the garden, waterfall flows down the rocks & small green frogs at night. We tried adding 6 .29 cent goldfish in there, but they died w/in a week or 2. Any advice on what i can do to enjoy my pond w. live little goldfish? Please help!!!we also added 2 bottom feeders which could still be alive.

first teh little 29 cent goldfish are basically not very healthy as they are just overbred and interbred for fish food for oscars, turtles, snakes etc.
I would suggest getting some koi as that is what they are rreally bred for is ponds.
quite often when you get teh little cheap golfish and put in a glass bowl tehy don't last long either

did you dechlorinate the water before adding the fish, if not calculte the total water volum and add dechlorinator. is the filter a pond filter or a fish pond filter?? while i agreee the feeders are usually useless as pets, some have ahd good luck with them. koi get WAY to big for a pond just 6 foot wide and 6" deep. some pets shops have goldfish that kinda look like koi, alot of people would pick those out for those smaller size ponds. there are also fancy, shubunkin and sarasa's. its a shallow pond so it could be gettign to hot, its kinda late in the year so try maybe 2-4 at at time and have no more than 8 this year, next year you might be ablke to go with 10-12 or so 4-6" fish. try some floating plant for ponds to help with the temp, a shade tree may help but i would consult the peole who installed your pond to see it that would cause a problem or not years down the road. try a few less fish, or add soemfish food to the pond, buy an aquarium test kit and when ammonia and nitrite are at 0 try maybe 2-3 fish at at time until testa say it ok (0-0)

Have you tested the pond water? Did you use pond conditioner when you added the water? How long has it been up and running and is it cycled?

Where did you buy your fish? If you bought your fish from walmart, that is your first problem. Even .10 goldfish are hearty commets and will do well in any pond. I often buy feeders to introduce new color patterns to my breeders.

Why is your pond only 8 inches deep? you are not planning on keeping the fish in there over winter I hope? The pond is not nearly deep enough and chances are the water was just below a boil and cooked the fish.

do you have a floating thermometer in the pond?

Feel free to email me an dI will try to help further.

If you bag the fish in his aquarium water and float it in the pond for awhile, you can add it. I wouldn't use the standard algae killers to the pond though. There's a small fish that eats algae and mosquito larvae that would be good to add a few of too. They are called gambusias (sp?) If the algae you have is the big kind that grows and floats on the top of the pool (bushy), you may have to just drag some of it out. The pond should have about two-thirds coverage with lilies, etc., to stay healthy and clean. The goldfish will probably like to have other goldfish too. Good luck.

if you use any chemicals to keep the water clean you need to stop using chemicals.
