We are getting a Jeep Wrangler, but what is the difference between a 4, 6 or whatever cylinder? What is it and what does it mean? Whats the difference? Thanks so much!

Engine size. Most lawn mowers have one cylinder. Go to a home depot or lawn shop and look at one. Car engines are made in a similar way in that they add many cylinders together to get more power. However some cars create power by making each cylinder larger to burn more gas for more power. Power can also be increased by pumping in more oxygen with a turbocharger or supercharger. Either way, Id drive one of each and consider your needs. If you need to often times be in hilly country or loaded down heavily with cargo or passengers or pulling a heavy trailer often, you may need a larger engine. If you only do this seldom, and dont have to have the extra acceleration of the larger engine, the smaller engine should do. And its cheaper to buy and some times cheaper on gas. Gas consumption is more a matter of how you drive rather than engine size. If you are heavy in acceleration and braking, you will use more gas, if you are more moderate with either engine you will use less. If you are unsure which engine to buy, ask someone in your area of the country who has a vehicle like the one you plan to buy, and ask those who have both engines what they would have done if they had it to do over again. Sometimes the smaller engine is geared differently than the larger engine and wont last as long.

The number of cylinders in a car engine is like the number of rowers in a rowboat: having more means that you can get more power and quicker acceleration, but it consumes more energy.

Choose the powertrain that suits your driving style:
You can choose 4 cylinders (Wrangler SE, available 2006 and earlier model years) for better fuel economy, or you can choose 6 cylinders for power and acceleration (this includes all available 2007 Wranglers: X, Sahara, Rubicon).

A gasoline engine has cylinders or tubes...Each cylinder has a piston inside that moves up and down. On top of the cylinder is a spark plug that ignites gas fumes and causes the piston to slam down the cylinder. This causes a shaft in the center of the engine to turn...giving it power...

More cylinders=More power....More cylinders=More gas used..

I have a Jeep (6 cyl) and get around 20 mpg...
Also on the jeep you might want to find out if its 2wd or 4wd....
2wheel drive means that only two wheels provide power and traction. 4 wheel drive means that you can turn the two other wheels into drive wheels as well.....So if you live where it snows or if you want to go off road you can stop and "lock in the hubs" of the front two wheels......Then you will have traction on all four wheels...

The more cylinders the bigger the engine the more power you have. Thus a 6cylinder will tend to have more power than a 4
