This story is from the Bible. I found this summary in a web site for children dealing with the Bible. The web page includes a famous painting of the fight.
"Goliath was a nine-foot-tall soldier from Gath. He bragged that he could beat any Israelite soldier who would fight him. But all the Israelite soldiers were afraid to fight him.
David was a young shepherd boy who believed in God. He said, "The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." David took his sling and five smooth stones from the brook. Then he went to fight Goliath.
King Saul wanted to put his heavy armor and helmet on David. He also tried to give David a big sword, but David said he could not wear them. He knew that his strength and protection came from God.
Goliath cursed the boy coming out to fight him. David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin; but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied."
David threw a stone with his sling at Goliath. It hit Goliath in the forehead and the giant fell face down. Without a sword in his hand he struck down the giant and killed him.*(See note below)
David believed in God, and God helped him win over the giant.
The giant fell when the stone hit him. Then David used the giant's own sword to kill him."
David went on to become the successor to King Saul.

Goliath was a giant warrior on the Philistines team..David was a shrimpy Israelite dude who looked a lot like David Spade, but more Jewish...David was sent a vision from "God" that he could take the big guy down if he believed in himself...so at 2:30 on Wed, Aug 16, 789 B.C., David used a sling to hurl a potato-sized rock at Goliath...His aim was true, and he hit Goliath right in the gonads.
This rendered Goliath sterile, and the Philistine's plan of breeding a race of giant fighters was thwarted...Israel went on to defeat the Philistines and thus were able to get rich by opening a successful chain of jewelery stores which exist to this very day.

it is relatively easy, the Bible says that David went to the king, the king gives David his royal armor which is too heavy, and too big. David says to the king "I have defeated wild animals to defend my sheep without armor, but with Gid and a sling". So David takes off the armor, and picks five smooth stones, there he meets Goliath, a nine foot tall (This is considered a midget to giants that we see in fiary tales) man. Goliath laghs, and taunts David, David picks one of the 5 smooth stones. He swings his sling, and waits until it is the correct speed and angle, he releases the leather pouch, and the stone hits Goliath. Goliath, is bleeding in the forehead, and died, he falls to the ground, and the phillistines (the supporters of Goliath) runs back to where ever they were hiding, and do not attack again, that is the summary of David and Goliath.

Okay, the really quick version:
This one army had a Giant named Goliath for a champion. They started invading a country ( I think it was Isreal, because this is a Biblical legend) and no one could stop them. Then, a young sheperd boy named David decided to stand up to Goliath, even when every one else was afraid and hopeless. He took some stones from a river, and proclaiming his faith in God, shot Goliath with his slingshot and killed him.
I think I got everything right, but check a Bible site to confirm my story. I got the gist of it, but I think you should still check.

David and Goliath are figures a well-known tale in the Bible (1 Samuel 17, in most English language versions), wherein David, an Israelite shepherd-boy and future King of Israel, using his sling, defeats and kills Goliath, a giant Philistine warrior, in single combat.

The Philistine army had gathered for war against Israel. The two armies faced each other, camped for battle on opposite sides of a steep valley. A Philistine giant measuring over nine feet tall and wearing full armor, came out each day for forty days, mocking and challenging the Israelites to fight. His name was Goliath. Saul, the King of Israel, and the whole army were terrified of Goliath.
One day David, the youngest son of Jesse, was sent to the battle lines by his father to bring back news of his brothers. David was probably just a young teenager at the time. While there, David heard Goliath shouting his daily defiance and he saw the great fear stirred within the men of Israel. David responded, "Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of God?"
So David volunteered to fight Goliath. It took some persuasion, but King Saul finally agreed to let David fight against the giant. Dressed in his simple tunic, carrying his shepherd's staff, sling shot and a pouch full of stones, David approached Goliath. The giant cursed at him, hurling threats and insults.
David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied ... today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air ... and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel ... it is not by sword or spear that the Lord saves; for the battle is the Lord's, and he will give all of you into our hands."
As Goliath moved in for the kill, David reached into his bag and slung one of his stones at Goliath's head. Finding a hole in the armor, the stone sank into the giant's forehead and he fell face down on the ground. David then took Goliath's sword, killed him and then cut off his head. When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran. So the Israelites pursued, chasing and killing them and plundering their camp.

Saul ends up dying, and David becomes the New King. You can read about it in the book of 1 Samuel.
