Many small websites are managed by company-owned computers, instead of hiring a web hosting service. That is a simple business decision.

Take Superior Electric at http://www.superiorelectric.com At one time, they had a full time guy that managed their on-line server. Let's say that cost $50,000 per year. But now they are using a web hosting service, and are probably paying less than $200 per year. They get the support they need, without the GUY.

But take Amazon... They need the staff to keep in contact with their sellers. They have Associate members and Advantage sellers. They help to manage and maintain the websites and uploads. They probably want to use their own maintanance and backup schedule, so they USE their own computers.

So what would your smart business design be?

Good luck and Happy Computing!

Most large websites will still contract the webhosting to a secured data-center facility.

In another lifetime, back when Exodus was a viable company, I provided consulting services while they were hosting Hotmail, Blizzard, and quite a few others. I worked on the systems that calculated the customer billing amounts based on bandwidth usage in excess of the contracted amount.

Someone else managed the system that billed customers for space-rental.

Any decent-sized operation will have their own IT department and their own hardware.

The hardware may be located in a hosting facility, but that is for the sake of solid internet connectivity, not for the hosting itself. Any big operation will rent some floor space in a hosting facility and build out multiple racks of their own equipment there.

Large dot coms will have an information technology (IT) department that will manage their web presence right there in-house.

They will own the domain on the web, and will manage their point of sale and marketing from in-house, also.
