because they don't tell you about the hundred sales they went to before they found this 'bargain'. be selective.

It's all about knowing what looks good on YOU.
If you want professional (and free!) help with this, Macy's has personal consultants, called Macy's By Appointment (note that I didn't have to make an appt, the lady just started helping me - also note that just about every good department store also offers this free service), that can help you find designers and styles that fit you and your budget. These women are surprisingly good at their job and can size you up in an instant.
Once you learn what looks great on you, you can go anywhere, even Kmart, to find stunning looks for you.

The keys, for me at least, are being selective and focusing on fit. Stores like K-Mart, as well, as garage sales and flea stores, etc. will have a lot of duds, but usually a few gems. For example, at a store like Goodwill, you will probably have to look through just about every shirt in order to find one that is nice and that fits you. It also helps to be able to visualize how a piece can work. For example, a loose-fitting shirt might look terrible by itself, but great with a belt cinching it. With the right accessories and other pieces, just about any piece can look chic and well put-together.

I love thrift stores and yard sales, and also estate sales. My best finds are in upper class neighborhoods and larger cities. There's no point in looking for the nicer stuff in areas where people can't afford to buy them in the first place. Estate sales can really be good sources for unusual items, since people tend to collect things over the years and you'll find lots of vintage stuff. Check your newspaper for estate sales and yard sales, but also check the papers from neighboring towns. Good luck!

I believe some people just spend more time than others looking for similar items at more than one store to see wich one gives them the best deals.I know I do this alot because it gives you more options and saves you money.for example I bought a 1/2 ctw diamond ring from hilightshowcase.com for $550 and other websites were retailing it for over $1000. It's not so much luck as it is time and research.

I think its what you put the item with. Mixing "cheap" clothes with more expensive things can make a difference (I would never go "cheap" on jeans). Another thing for me would be accessories. Handbag.com have lots of cool ideas.

I go to many resale stores.I do not always hit,but I have gotten many good deals...I bought a 500.00 dollar leather coat for 14 dollars, also I have bought many clothes for work and play for just a fraction of the cost. you need to have "your style" and look at several ways to wear that one piece. Good luck.
