My Dad was the greatest man I ever met. He was the best I was remembering this morning when I was about five or so He would put a towel on his head and run around the back yard playing Batman with me.
he was older then most of my friends dad's 43 when I was born, so a lot of what he taught me were kind of "old fashioned" values. He had fought in World War II but it was not till he passed away five years ago that I found out he had a purple heart and a medal for bravery under fire. He worked at Con Edison and worked the night shift. My Mom worked days so it was Dad who fixed my breakfast and checked my homework in the mornings. He would also pick a topic of the "day" and then the next morning we would talk about it. Some times it was books sometimes movies. politics and history a lot.
He died shortly after September 11, they say it was throat cancer, but I know that he had stood on the stoop of my old house that morning and looked across the bay and saw those planes hit those towers. He never said a word about what he saw, but I think that seeing his country attacked again (he had been at Pearl Harbor) broke his heart.
The nicest thing he ever said to me was when my son was about 5 and I was playing catch with him. He said "you are better at this then I was."
He was wrong. I will never ever be half as good
I got to stop now it is way to hard to type crying this hard
Happy father's day to all

Not around to much. My dad has been in and out of prison much of my life. Which really sucks on days like today because I dont even get to hear his voice if I wanted to... I love him very much but I wish, as an adult, he would make some better decisions in his life, taking me into consideration sometimes. Im almost 20 so i've been dealing with this for a while but its still hard.

My dad was an alcoholic in my childhood. He overcame this in order to get full custody of me (my mom was very ill & could no longer care for me).
Five years later, he died at the age of 51 of a heart attack (which was the result of his drinking & smoking). I was only 13 at the time.
