No, it's not just a western thing. I think western teens are more likely to ask for help though because other cultures may see this type of thing as shameful, which may lead parents in other cultures to feel ashamed of their kids. In America, most kids who cut or who have eating disorders do these things in secret and usually get help because they got caught. These things are very serious mental health issues and I've never seen a another teen trying to teach these behaviors to others. Cutting is usually done to try and release inner pain that kids can't deal with. I also know a kid who used to cut and wasn't American. I would hope you would have more compassion for a teen in trouble. These are actual psychiatric issues that need professional help. I'd hate to think if your child were in trouble you would blame the western culture and have no compassion!

I'm getting quite annoyed at statements like this one you normally don't hear about cutting as people keep it secretive also the more e.g teachers talk about it in front of people who don't cut the more they would want to try and see if it does take away the pain. Also people may have 'survived wars' and not cut but self harm isn't a relatively new thing and who is anyone to judge how people take things e.g someones family member dies and they do it to feel something other than the mental pain they are going through and somehow it seems to work for them who is anyone to say who has a reason to cut and one hasn't I'm not in anyway saying that cutting is a healthy coping mechanism and i think it isn't a light topic as some people do do it for attention but the majority of people hide the fact that they cut etc also people who cut do it to take away the pain and vent there frustration there is a release of endorphins to deal with the bodies trauma witch gives it you a rush and can make self harming addictive and the self harmer usually connects the cutting with a nice feeling after. It isn't all im cool so i cut!

What a load of crap...all people deal with hardships in different ways. It is people like you that make it hard for people like me to get help! I didn't do it for the attention, I am dealing with my issues and getting help. Cultures are different and the pressures are different...you don't see anyone in the US deforming little girls so they don't "stray when they are married"...that is tragic and causes it's own harm! There are people who cut for attention but there are so many who don't. They are looking for a way to release the pain that they are incapable of dealing with. I am not a teenager either so it is not a fad. It is a coping method that is serious and can be fatal. Suicide is not a fade either, btw Hello, suicide bombers...how much more unappreciative can you get...they are killing innocent people who can't beg or pray to live. Everyone is surviving their own war in many ways. Coping methods are not fashion, they are not something to match with your jeans or jewerly. No, no one mentions cutting b/c they are met with attitudes like yours and many others posted...why would they mention it just to have you and others judge and think you are better because you drink beers, smoke, eat or get freaky with anyone you see to cope with your issues...HELLO, wake up world! Had someone noticed when I started at age 8 or 9, I would not have to deal with it as an adult at age 29! I am 32 now. Stop judging and learn how to be compassionate or at the very least shut up if it doesn't concern you or you have no idea what you are talking about!

No, it's not just a "western popular thing". There are those in other countries who cut and are suicidal as well. In fact, the ones you hear about the most are usually those who either were found out and seeking help, or those who don't really do any of it. You don't know how these people are living, and how they feel. Even if they're lives are better than so many others, they may have other reasons to wish for death.

No it's not a fashion trend, they usually have issues they can't or do not know how to communicate to an adult around them.
Even as far back as the 1980's this occured. I know this because when I was in high school I found that my best friend was cutting herself open because she did not have a way to relay that she was being sexually abused by a family member so the cutting became a psychological release - a trade-off if you will - physical pain to keep the mind from the emotional pain.
She went and got therapy and is now a very happy well adjusted adult.
To brush off anything so serious as doing real damage to oneself as a fad is uncaring.

Yes, it is just another fashion trend. And I say the same thing to every "suicidal" little kid on here. That they need to stop being spoiled little brats that cut themselves for attention just because the girl/boy they like doesn't like them back or because their mommy and daddy won't let them go to some party. It's pathetic and anyone who cuts themselves will get no sympathy from me.

I agree with you....But cutting does help some people cope and personally I could care less if some disillusioned, spoiled, and depressed dolt is taking a razor to themselves. If it is a call for help, I'm not listening.

You're right.. American teenagers who do that are just retarted.
Its a trend that started a few years ago, and somehow, its become the cool thing to do. Emo music and culture has glorified mental illness and made it into something desireable. Those kids are just begging for attention any way they can think of.
Those kids need to be smacked upside the head- you're right, they don't understand how lucky they are.

They're spoiled and selfish. That's what it's about. Wait until they are 30 or so and trying to find dates with scars all over their bodies, see how ugly they are then.
