There is always a chance of pregnancy when you have intercourse. With the pill taken correctly it is minimal but if you are missing pills or starting the next pack late you can still release an egg and increase your chances of pregnancy. I would really suggest you ask your partner to wear a condom so that your chances of pregnancy are really really slim.

Birth control pills work by inhibiting your body from releasing an egg- if there is no egg you cannot get pregnant. They also thicken the cervical mucous so the sperm have more difficulty getting through the cervix. The control of your period is achieved by stopping the hormones for a week or 4 days each month (depending on your prescription). When you skip the hormones and take the inactive pills then your body thinks it is time for a period and has one. Taking pills reduces your chances of ovarian cancer for 10 years after you take the last one and makes your period lighter, shorter and for many women less cramping.

Hope this helps.

If taken regularly the pill is 99% effective - that means there is still a 1% chance of getting pregnant if you have unprotected sex. The pill works by preventing ovulation and implantation when you take the green pills your body has already ovulated and is ready to menstruate.
the pill does not protect against STD's and HIV so you should always use a condom to protect yourself from these and other complications.

If you take the pill at the same time, every day, as directed, then your chances of not getting pregnant are better than 99%. The green pills do not have any hormones in them (they are basically sugar pills), and they cause you to have a "fake" period. There are very detailed directions included that explain what to do if you miss pills.

If you are still worried about pregnancy, have your BF wear a condom. If you are terrified of pregnancy, than consider abstinence.
