Both are same only difference is the name they are given, Notebook is used mainly for office work, but Laptop can be used for gaming also, because of different loaded software in them, size and look is the same. From looking at them you cannot differentiate whether it is notebook or laptop

Most people use the terms notebook and laptop computer interchangably. Once it's not sitting on top of your desk every portable computer instantly becomes a notebook or laptop regardless of its configuration. There are, however, some very big differences between notebook and laptop computers.

A standard notebook has the following features:
1. Ultralight. Less weight is better.
2. 4 hours+ battery life.
3. No internal floppy drive.
4. Minimal graphics subsystem.
5. No internal DVD or CD system.
6. 12" - 14" TFT screen.
7. Low profile (thin).
8. Integrated modem and network connection.
9. Smallest possible keyboard that retains functionality.
10. Low power consumption Celeron or Centrino style processor.

In essence a notebook computer is designed to provide mobile computing that won't break your back yet still offer all the power the mobile users requires for work and some leisure pursuits. This portability normally comes at a price. The level of minituarization involved comes at a cost and high end notebooks can prove to be quite expensive.

A laptop is designed to sit on your lap and you can therefore expect it to be quite large and loaded down with features and power.

The standard laptop computer would have some ,if not all, of the following features:
1. 14" - 17" (widescreen) TFT screen.
2. Nvidia GeForce or ATI Radeon graphics subsystem.
3. Internal DVD-ROM or DVD-RW drive
4. Large full featured keyboard.
5. 2 hour+ battery life.
6. Upgradeable.
7. Integrated modem, network and Wi-Fi capabilities.
8. High quality integrate audio and speaker system.
9. Low power consumption, high performance Intel Centrino style processor.

Difference Between a Laptop and a Notebook
Source: http://whitecapcomputer.com/newsletter/articles/notebook_vs_laptop.htm

Laptop computers are somewhat larger than notebooks and will accommodate a built-in disk drive unit and; optionally, a floppy drive unit. That is, a CD ROM drive is either built into the unit or the unit has a built-in bay that will accommodate a removable CD ROM drive.
Notebook computers will allow you to attach, via cable, a CD ROM drive. Since the drive is not built into the unit, notebooks are smaller and lighter than laptops. Hence, a notebook is an ultra small laptop. Another way to look at it is a notebook is about the size (or a little larger than) of a real [binder] notebook.
Deskbook computers often refer to mobile computers that can be considered as desktop replacement units. Deskbooks tend to be larger and heavier than average notebook/laptop computers. Generally the display units are 15 inches or larger. They tend to draw down battery power relatively quickly due to their powerful, but power-hungry, processors. If you are looking for the power of a desktop unit, with the freedom of mobility, then a deskbook may fit the bill.
Tablet PCs are mobile computers with a twist. That is, you can literally twist the monitor. Being a Tablet means that the display screen will swivel on its base - usually 360 degrees. They generally allow you to capture handwriting and store it on the computer. Tablets are no more mobile than any other laptop or notebook.

Notebooks are smaller than Laptops conceptionally. But nowdays there is no diff as such, depending on the brand/manufacturer they call it as either notebook or laptop. But as per OEM standards, notebook is something which is lighter than laptop and which doesn't have the CD-ROM and other stuff life FDD. Where as you will be getting CD-ROM in Laptop.

Exactly the same thing. they have to call them notebooks now to reduce the chance of being sued because a man decieded to use his LAPtop naked and he got burned on his lap. So he sued the manufacturer saying that the laptop is designed for the lap and he got burned. Not sure if he won but now they call em notebooks to reduce that risk. What has this world come too.

They are the same except this man sued the notebook manufacturer because he set it on top of a note he had written and it burned it up and he sued for damages.
Then he went out to get a coffee at Mc Donalds.

Laptop is the american appellation . It describes the appearance of the machine. Notebook is the British appellation, and it describes the function of the machine. Otherwise no difference except in the minds of those who created the descriptive name of the portable pc
