my opinion of her is that she was a power hungry tyrant who broke the backs of the british workers, shutting down coal mines, steel works and generaly ignoring the wishes of the manual workers in her quest to create more wealth for those at the top of the ladder, this is evident in tv dramas of the early 80,s like alan bleasdales '' boys from the blackstuff'' showing how those at the bottom of the social scale were left in desperation unable to provide for their families or even to find work she was saved by the outbreak of war against argentina where victory guaranteed her another term in office. in my mind she gave us victorian values alright, creating a 2 tear system of those who had it all and those who had it taken from them and were left with nothing, just seen a programme comemorating the end of the falklands war and them speaking of her in glowing terms, have they lost their memories of what life was really like for so many living under her tyrany? whats your opinion her?

I despise Thatcher and cannot wait til she is in Hell. A pity the plan to send her there earlier did fail.

Don't forget ship building, she destroyed that as well. When she was 'finally' turned out of office, this country was on its knees. My family had dinner at out mothers house today; me, my sis, my mum and my gran (bless her). My sis says she's going to become a plumber, because this country is crying out for plumbers. I said this country is crying out for craftsmen of all skills, because Thatcher closed down all the apprenticeship schemes. My sis said don't bring politics into it, she's an ardent tory supporter. Then all she would say as the three of us told her, repeatedly, about how bad the tories are for people who have to work for a living, was I'm not listening and I hope they're back in power soon. She, like the rest of the youth who are being told that it's only money that matters, will find out one day. Unfortunately a large number of people will suffer great hardship while these stupid people are learning. That's if they have the intelligence to ever realize that the media is lying to them.

Conservative supporters just don't listen to reason, or knowledge, or experience; all they can see is the carrot, waving in front of the blue flag.

Unfortunately the media sides with the tory party, especially the papers, because the tories cut taxes on large earners, which is what newspaper owners are! So the blues always get their support.

As we all know, what was once red is also slowly fading to blue. What was blue simply can't make it's mind up any more, the Greens seem to be wandering around in the dark, the Libs are deffinately something and the BNP will completely destroy the country (deporting people will not solve anything!) I try not to think about it anymore.

I wish you all the best deciding who to agree with. It seems to be either red or blue, need or greed, a society that cares for the masses and tries to provide for all, or a society that makes an extremely small number of people fantastically rich while millions suffer genuine hardship.

The time under Maggie Thatcher was the start of the down fall of the rights of the British people , She started selling the peoples assets off

Everyone paid towards these assets , but only the rich gained

And now the Govenment go one step further , they enforce there views by banning

This country belongs to us the public , not a few people that are out of touch with what we want , but so is there power , we are unable to do anything about it

Couldn't agree more Maggie Thatcher and her cohorts were the worst thing to happen to Britain. She took a country that was proud to make things and chopped the workers of at the knee caps with her terrible "Reforms"? She then closed the most profitable deep mining pits in the world putting thousands on the dole. After this the ***** had the temerity to sell us (And here I mean her rich friends) our own bloody property. Didn't we already own British Gas , British telecom, The Electricity company's, and others and please do not believe the bull about them swallowing tax payers money (In its last couple of years alone British Telecom As it became gave upwards of £700Million pounds to the Tax man.
So in short the woman was and still is a conceited ***** who thought she could never be wrong!

of course she was the biggest b--ard let loose on the working population of the UK, but then isn't the media exactly the same propping up washed up ex leaders of government who didn't give a damn for this country or its workforce.
Its the same old story, knighthoods and honours handed out willy nilly to tyrants who have suppressed the British people. When are we going to wake up, or are we so laid back that we let our children think these so called politicians of yesteryear were good government officials.
I suppose Tony Blair will be lined up for a knighthood because he led the country into a war the people never wanted. the hypocrisy of it all.

She was the biggest cvnt this country has ever seen. There are still regions of the country especially around the old colliery towns that will never ever recover, workers big, strong, proud men tossed on the scrap heap and their childrens sense of pride destroyed, her legacy! The falklands - as a nation we should be really, really proud of murdering people over a lump of rock (to save her sorry **** in that election). Well at least we must have learned about illegal wars? Oh! + the fvcker nicked my milk when i was little! As for the copper who posted that he got the scares, he should be bloody ashamed SELLOUT!

Agreed. At least we only have shorter terms in America, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Your endless Thatcher years were brutal. She and Regan were in bed together the same way Bush & Blair have been recently. Same thing when Regan died, everything was washed over and forgotten.

How can you answer that. You said it all well almost. If you add to that the total destruction of the Trade Unions rights and ability to fight back that's it. The end of the greatest manufacturing country in the world. The woman was a puppet for the financial sector dancing to the tune of capitalism.

Study politics and history at uni and keep an open mind.

Come on.... are you telling me that you wish that the mines were still open and that you would love to become a miner. Do you want all that soot, coating our buildings and streets, polluting our children's lungs? Do you want to take kids out of school before they're 16 to repeat this way of life?

By the way, the miners got massive redundancy pay outs, and loads of free coal, Some bought their homes or started new businesses with it, while others pissed it up the wall in pubs. Do you know, I know a minor who is still living on his redundancy money even now, some 20 odd years later.

I remember in1997, how people like yourself ran around ranting about the Tories... well from what I remember, British people were a dam sight happier then, than what they are now after 10yrs of labour.

Mrs Maggie Thatcher is and always will be, 100 times the prime minister, Blair or brown will ever be.

I wish the younger writers would educate themselves in politics and economics.... you no longer have to repeat everything that came out of your fathers mouth 25 years ago....

The coal mines have left the UK with hundreds of thousands of ex miners seeking compensation and care for lung diseases. So for this Maggie has saved many lives. The unions brought about much of the loss in steel works and other manufacturing industries by making them un-competitive. Things have continually improved generally in this country since World War 2, however there has not been any great improvement since she left office. But I do wonder about the logic of the selling off council houses.

It was the Unions that destroyed British industry with their endless strikes and ridiculous pay demands. They controlled the Labour Party with their block vote, and Arthur Scargill, that arch leftie commy, held the country to ransom. It was vital that someone broke the unions power, and Maggie had the guts to do it.

Those coalmines and steel works you speak off were grossly uneconomic, and, like much of the state owned industries at the time, were inefficient and consumed a fortune in taxpayer subsidy.

However, judging by your subtext, no one will change your mind, so I will leave it there, agreeing to disagree.
