What kind of self defense are you talking about?

The rule of thumb is that you have to prove that you did not respond with a higher level of response than was needed. You also have to prove that you felt imperiled and there was no other action that could (or as you percieved it) be taken. Others were not stepping in, you could not walk away, call the police etc.

An extreme example that has been tried in court many times. A guy breaks into you house at night and you shoot him..... you have to show that you had no other choice as in noway to detain him or have time to call the police. If you killed the guy his FAMILY could come back and sue you in civil court even if you had been cleared criminally by the police. Personally I would rather make short work of the person as at least I would know my family was safe regardless of what happened to me.

Now if it was just a fistfight or something. You would probably have to prove that they were seriously beating the snot out of you. You would have to prove that you were not acting aggressive or yelling prior to the fight and had no opportunity to walk away.

As in all things..... when in doubt talk to a lawyer.

Yes-if you go to www.legis.state.ia.us you can find current laws on Iowa self-defence. Depending on how you spell defence-with a 'c' or an 's' in it, it has a different meaning.
Type self defence in the search box and it comes up with google that will lead you to what you're looking for.
