Disgraceful ! His book was not particularly good, upset too many people and he is only famous because of that one thing. There are plenty of worthy authors who could have been given this recognition - a poor choice.

Rushdie's body of work is enormous. His second novel. Midnight's Children, won the Booker prize and then the Booker of Bookers for being the best of the winners from the previous 25 years. His later work has gained critical acclaim and international awards. He is a major British writer and his work away from literature helped earn him his much deserved knighthood.
I wouldn't mind betting that those who ctritcise the award have never read anything he has written.

What Britian desperate replaced into their inner decision and you may say they had all the rigt to make that decision. even with the undeniable fact that, interior the ambience of those days the place fairly some non secular sensitivities exist and with the greater effective tensions, it replaced into not an exceptionally sensible element to do. additionally that's against the diplomatic ettiquette of a rustic. apart from, somebody who's literary accumen is purely that he has ridiculed one faith (and accomplished it continuously and with this sole objective), what variety of literary success or centers does he get known for via this knighthood? Or replaced into it a attractiveness for featuring a distorted photograph of Islam which might justify West's hatred for the religion? His very own present day writers (Roald Dahl to cite one) criticised his writings on the time they have been revealed via calling them mischief and dishonesty to literature.

As far as courage - he certainly has shown his convictions when many of us would not have.
I have only read a small portiion of "The Satanic Verses" - but what strikes me about his situation is that the people that do not like him, that want to see him dead, are ones that should be exposed and really, the author has shown he has been couageous and successful when those types don't like what he is doing.
That is the type of thing that makes knighting credible.

Appalling insensitivity to moslem believers in the U.K in particular, but just as astoundingly to many of us is that Rushdie has regularly insulted and sneered at the British and their way of life over many years, in print and verbally and now he wants to accept our highest honour. Who has the most humbug-him or us?

This dreadful Government has brought the whole honours system into a shambolic farce. They make it worse because they only award honours to their own supporters and others who don't deserve any honour.

He was knighted simply to be politically provocative.
I hardly think his services to the nation warrant a knigthood.

I'm just glad David Beckham didn't get a knighthood. Imagine the stupid poses Victoria would screw herself into if he had got one. I wonder what that woman is going to do when she gets older and looks even more ridiculous in her photos - shoot herself?
