Box turtles like to hunker in shallow burrows, small cave-like indentations, etc. It makes happier box turtles if they can dig in.

Box turtles like and need humidity. Do you have a hide box? A good hide is a plastic container turned upside down with a hole cut out. This will trap the humidity in. You can spray the substrate (soil mixture) once a day. Hatchlings and smaller boxies like to hide to feel safe, get humidity to grow well. Their shell will not develop properly if it is too dry.

I would use a painter's pan filled with water and bury that so it cannot dig it up. This works well.

It sounds to me like he might feel overstimulated and needs a hide box or something similar. If you provide him with something he can hide in and feel safe, he might stop tipping things over and hiding in inappropriate places. Good luck!

Because they prefer shade over light.
