Containment. The theory was to keep the Soviet Union bound up in their present satellite countries. And not to let them expand into other areas of the world. America had a whole list of organization designed to get a head start on the Soviets and to discourage them from expansion. Most of these groups were actually suppose to be groups of military allies and to be swamped with financial aid. NATO, SEATO,OAS, Alliance for Progress.and probably some we didn't know about. For the most part containment worked and we were allowed through different processes force the USSR in financial ruin which they are still trying to recover from. Now that Russia is under control of Putin, a former KGB official, I expect that Russia will gradually and covert return to the policies of the former Soviet Union.

Ok, let's sort out the the timeline first. Russia (the Russian Empire with the Czar, Emperor as a head of state) entered the WWI on the side of Britain and France against Germany and its allies in 1914. So, it did not fight against the USA that joined the war on the side of Britain and France later in 1917. After Russian February (1917) revolution the Czar (Nickolas II) abdicated and there was formed Provisional Government in Russia that continued the war against Germany on the side of Britain, France and the USA. Due to the many reasons the political situation in Russia was extremely volatile at that time and the Bolsheviks (communists) headed by Vladimir Lenin seized the power in October (old calendar) 1917. One of the first Lenin's decrees was a decree that announced that Russia was ready to stop the war against Germany. For the Bolsheviks it was important since they came to the power on the wave of anti-war sentiments. The Bolsheviks concluded a peace agreement with Germany in 1918 just a few months before Germany lost the war. Then from 1918 to 1922 different political fractions fought in the Russian Civil War that was won by Bolsheviks (communist) who formed the Soviet Union (USSR - Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics) that was constituted of a few Socialist Republics (actually it comprised the territory of the former Russian Empire with the exceptions for Poland and Finland) in 1922. The Soviet Union existed from 1922 to 1991. During the WWII the Soviet Union fought on the side of Britain and France again against Germany. As you know the USA joined the war after Pearl Harbour and the two became allies again. After the WWII because of different reasons the Soviet Union and the USA were engaged in the COLD WAR that never turned out to be "hot".
