The eurorail is the cheapest :) Take the fast train from london through the channel to paris and then take the eurorail to rome. If there is no objection to travel time, I say take this one. It will probably be about half the price of flying and you get to see the beautiful countrysides of France and Italy.

Have a nice trip!

Go to ryanair.com and search the date you want from london STN (Stanstead airport) to Rome. I just checked July 18 and it was about 12.99 one way plus taxes.

I will agree that the train is more interesting, fun, and you see the lands, but it's not going to be cheaper anymore with ryanair and easyjet in the market.
If you want to go cheap by bus, look on Eurolines.com
Bus is not as nice as train in my opinion, but if you find the train too expensive, you could take a bus, but break it up and stop more often since it's not as comfortable and they don't have restaurant and bar on board. I used to hitchhike in Europe, which worked well in the 80's, but I don't know about now. It's risky, too.
If you can afford it, take the train; look for student fares if you're under 26.
It's likely the train from London will be the most expensive part. You could fly cheaply from london to somewhere in France or italy (Check Ryanair and Easyjet.)then get a Eurail Selectpass (a Saver pass if 2 or more travel together) for France, Switzerland, and Italy for how many days you need. Compare that to a one way train ticket from France to italy or London to Italy, or however you want to travel.
Goingthrough Switz. is expensive, so if you just go through France and Italy, you can save a lot on the train. Check the different ways to go and compare.
