A great way to sample the horse business and get a real idea of what working with horses would take is to be a Working Student. As a working student you learn about all aspects of working with horses... From running a business and helping designing stallion packages to mucking stalls to learning how to train a baby to lead! Often times you get a place to stay on the farm, riding lessons, horses to ride, and a little money to take care of your expenses.

As for ideas there's the usual: horse trainer, breeder, Vet, farrier, riding coach. But think outside the box if those ideas don't strike your fancy! There are horse insurance agents, web designers, saddle makers, and various research careers in creating supplements, food, or improving on other various products for the sport. One could be a fashion designer and design various riding apparel! Lots of different things, and there are lots of horse people willing to spend the $$$ on your ideas!

A new and upcoming horse related job is Equine Massage. There is a school in VA called EQUISSAGE. There are other schools out there, but most of the instructors graduated from EQUISSAGE. This can be a really lucrative business and you are your own boss.

Bloodstock agent - great pay and hours plus get to travel

Instructor - need exams, money not so great

nightwatch man - work nights on big farms and foal out mares- seasonal, usually pays good

Pedigree and nominations - helps decide what mare should be bred to certain stallions, researches pedigrees for sales and prospective purchases - office hours, good money

Surgical tech - work in operating rooms, must be flexible because you can't just leave surgery at 5pm when your shift is supposed to end.

Wrangler/trail guide - most national parks offer these seasonal jobs with room and board and small wage (really small wage)

Riding instructor, equine vet, trainer, groom, farrier (puts the horse's shoes on, clips hooves), breeder. As a vet, trainer, breeder, and riding instructor, you can specialize in certain things- for example, western instructor, racehorse breeder, hunter-jumper trainer, equine cardiologist, etc., etc. There's lots out there to do- I'm sure I haven't mentioned half of it!
