If he pretends they are real, then there is a problem if he is not baby sitting a little girl when doing so. If by playing you mean combing the hair and dressing the dolls for display. When babysitting my niece, we play Barbies. In the scheme of things and the importance to her in my participation in such activity, it is of no consequence what others might think. It makes the child happy now and provides pleasant memories for her when older. Is he an artist? Many male artists play with Barbies in creating their own art work. A famous artist was sued by Mattel because he played with them in creating photographic art work. He did many things with the dolls in different scenes and unfavorable circumstances. If he's playing Barbie dolls with your daughter or a niece then it's not weird at all. If he plays with them on his own, yep, that's a little weird.
