It's a given the players will be suspended for fighting, but the umpire should absolutely be suspended for allowing the fight to occur. I've never seen a player almost beaned, that wasn't escorted to first by the home plate umpire. At the very least, he should have known very heated words would be exchanged (even by a class act like Derek Lee).

No, he shouldn't be blamed for the fight. He has other things to do than escort a grown man down the first base line. In fact because it was such a class act guy like Derek Lee he probably wasn't worried about it.

Two players fight, and it's the plate umpire's responsibility? As far as the escort down to firts base., that only occurs when a batter is hit and immediatly starts going to first base. When the batter goes down and stays down, its asuumed nothing will happen after that, unless dugouts empty.

But to blame the umpire becuase two plays got into a fight is ridiculous.

i hate the cubs but i love derek lee he IS a class act and is more classy then any athlete anywhere. i dont know what the exchange was but something said must of been bad for lee to throw the first punch. also how many times does someone have to throw a baseball at your head before you get mad? me it only takes one its uncalled for and you can injure someone very badly

with that said no the umps cant control anyone and its not like they are bouncers or bodyguards or even cops with riot gear. they can only call the game and call out ejections but for them to break up fights its not an easy thing to do. besides im assuming there was no warning before that pitch. there was one after but not before

No, it's not the umpires fault. It's not his job to walk the guy to first. Besides, if Derek Lee is such a class act then he should've just let it go no matter what the pitcher said to him.

No way. The umpire didn't tell Lee to go after the pitcher. It's Lee's coaches and manager's job to make sure he keep's his cool. It's not the umpires job to baby sit.

So he wiped the plate off in the previous the at bat all started and it develop into the 2nd pitch of the at bat. What develop into Runge even doing wiping off the plate interior the direction of the at bat? He needed a reason to bypass out and extra the argument. As a 0.33 technology umpire brian runge might desire to be attentive to extra suitable than every physique that no person paid funds to return watch him. I enjoyed that Manuel got here out to guard his participant in contrast, and in simple terms once you concept that Runge could no longer do something extra planned to teach that he develop into searching for a reason to throw somebody out he chested the mets skipper up and proceeded along with his very lively "you're outta right here" for each individual to be sure. i think of the finished act via whats meant to be an umpire with numerous journey develop into ridiculous. Runge might desire to stand a protracted suspension, and somebody might desire to remind him that the excellent umpire is one that is going neglected.

No, not at all. The players are grown adults and are responsible for their own actions. Lee (or any other player in that situation) should not have to be held by the hand and walked to first base.
