I had this short course on evolutionary biochemistry/biology. It was discussed there how the living part of the world came to be from inorganic elements, the so-called "primordial soup" experiment. Also, many species are really inter-related in some point in time. We are related to sponges after all. Another thing, RNAs came first before DNAs. It's really amazing to know such things even if they have no practical use. It's just fun to learn things.

The best way to find out what's the coolest for you is to take a bio class. For me its evolutionary biology and how genetics play a big role in that. And pretty much just the intricacies of genetics all together.

I studied biology as part of my secondary school and that was way back in 1961! But if we see the complexities of even fairly simple living systems (as compared to engineered systems - man made), we find that even the most complex engineering systems are relatively less complex compared to living systems.

Thus a study of biology helps one in understanding the behavior of complex systems in engineering and society too.

I agree with Geolicious, but for me the most interesting and amazing thing about biology is how our tiny cells are so complex in their structure and mechanisms.
