I know it can't be good for the car, but if you're backing up and you're ready to go forward and you go right from reverse to drive while the car is still backing up (not accelerating until you're in drive of course) what kind of effects will you see? does it hurt it every time, or just in the long run?

Well if the car is an automatic depending on your speed it may not hurt anything. But if you're really moving it could possibly damage the tranny. If it's a manual transmission you could drop it out the bottom of your car....LOL. Most modern automatics have a safety feature that will not allow you to shift from reverse to drive while in motion.

It hurts it every time and that shortens the life of the transmission in the long run. Do not do this unless it's an emergency in which case you're not worried about the transmission.
