Houston Astros' Bob Watson for the 1,000,000th
******************************
Davey Concepcion was the 1,000,001th
An article on the Conception:
Great piece on Davey’s quest for Cooperstown.
I think one personal memory I have of this great shortstop sums up his lifelong futility in getting the recognition he so logically deserves: I cannot recall the year, but I do remember it being bat Day at Riverfront. Major League Baseball was closing in on its 1,000,000th run.
For a few weeks, the Riverfront scoreboard was counting down (up, I guess) the progress of the pursuit to a million. The counter reached 999,999 when Davey steps to the plate. He sends a ball over the wall on a line and the place goes nuts!
I remember hugging my parents and my friend as the stadium looked like a forest with 50,000 red bats waving in the air. The HR gave the Reds the lead and it was a very cool moment—even as an 11 or 12 year old, I recalled thinking, “I’ll always remember this moment, seeing baseball’s millionth run, being scored by the Reds for the rest of my life”.
A few moment later, the scoreboard informed us that Concepcion’s run was actually baseball’s 1,000,001th run as it was determined the Bob Watson had actually scored the millionth in Houston as Davey was rounding the bases.
Once again, he just missed immortality.

Bob Watson scored 1 million, and I am sure an Oakland Athletic scored 1,000,001 (Rickey Henderson?)

Houston's Bob Watson, based upon known information at the time. (It probably wasn't REALLY the millionth run, but it was the one accepted based upon known historical research. Sufficiently symbolic of the concept nonetheless. Hey, McDonald's isn't certain of how many hamburgers it has sold.)
What I recall -- and I'm not going to look it up -- was that all the parks were linked by telephone that day to facilitate a meaningful countdown. Davey Concepcion homered nearly simultaneously with Watson coming around to score, so he likely has the million-and-first run.
