of current form, or of all time?
all time is neville. Neville not only plays defense extremely well, but he helps ronaldo with overlapping runs. Plus a great talent to have being able to use both right and left foots well. He may not have much skill, but his key to success is determination. I don't see anyone being able to dethrone him.
But in current form through this season, it would have to be vidic. To beat vidic in the air is like being as tall as the empire state building. ITS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. Not only that, but has a great clearence, and is aggresive on plays. Plus vidic head is also used for scoring goals. Everything you would want in a center back.

Gary Neville is a joke, sure he can defend well sometimes but he can't wimp a cross into the 18 to save his life.
Rio tends to put the ball into his own net in some situations but also alright.
If Heinze was more constant and stayed out of injury trouble he would rival the best of the defenders but for now he is not.
Nemanja Vidic is by far the best defender, given he wasn't the best to start out but now that he knows the style of the EPL Vidic is the best on Manu. He wins everything and anything in the air and can get stuck in when he wants. Also an aerial presence for corners. Vidic=The Best

Neville Gets Caught out of position a fair bit (partly because he tries to move oto centrally to cover, and makes bad decisions in when to overlap - but credit to him he changed his game to try and be a modern day full back).
Silvestre has terrible lapses of concentration.
Brown is not consistent, although can be fantastic on his day
Heinze is hard to fault for commitment but as a fulback is not as attacking as others and as a centre back is not as a dominant as vidic and ferdy.
Its really out of Rio and Vidic - Vidic by far an away the better player last year, but Rio has the anticpation to read a game, and snuffs things out before danger appears so sometimes people do not realise how good he is because they have not even noticed the danger he was responsding to or where he moved from.
Yup Ferdy for me.

Over a number of years it's got to be gary Neville. He came in as a youngster and has been capped for England under four different managers. He is relaible and a steady influence on the others.

Of all time neville.. always gives 100% and is a brilliant defender.. currently Evra... is capable of scoring ten goals or so ,defends well and gets forward with much better passing then heinze, plus Heinze is too tempramental and gets wound up too easily.

Vidic for me without a doubt. He is strong, has good vision to see whats coming on most occasions. Positions himself well and is not afraid to go for the tackle. he is the heart of our defencive line now. But Gary Neville has been a giant and a workhorse and his overall contribution will not be forgotten.

ferdinand has the most talent and is the most versatile. neville has more experience though and i think he and ferdinand are the best defenders.
