My husband's colleague's wife is having a baby and we are invited to her baby shower. What is the appropriate gift to give? I don't want to spend more than $25-$30. I know we can give clothes, bottle, toys etc. I really want to give clothes. The problem is they don't know the gender of the baby and they don't have a registry. I went to a few stores and all they had was either blue or pink colored clothes. What can I give that they would really like.

If you really want to get clothes, try looking for organic cotton baby clothes. Most of the time, they will come in a natural color. Before I found out what I was having I bought a lot of natural, beige and white colored baby clothes (I don't like yellow and mint). You could get a sleeper and a receiving blanket. Or a great gift is a swaddler/sleep sack. Kiddopottamus makes an organic cotton sleep sack and it sells for about $15 (Babies-R-Us has them). Halo makes an organic sleep sack with a removable swaddler which runs around $25.
Do you have time to order something from the Internet? You will find some great things to choose from and some good deals.

Try the Disney store, some have baby clothes
Try JC Penny
Try Target
Try Old Navy

Looks for greens, Yellows, prints
Dark blues and reds can be unisex
Also instead of 0-3 months, get 3-6 or 6-9 month clothes
My child was out of 0-3 months when she was born
She was in 6-9, but 3 months
Having bigger sizes help in the long term
To be safe, 3-6 months

good luck

I've heard that one of the most practical and wonderful gifts was onesies in all sizes and warmth’s, for example;

If the baby will be born in August, buy a one piece light short sleeved sleeper aged 0-3 months. Then a 3-6 months sleeper with long sleeves but no legs for the fall, then a 6-9 months sleeper that is a full piece with feet for winter, and finally a sleeper with no feet and maybe short sleeves for spring, size 9-12 months.

Each sleeper will be the right size and warmth for each season, and then they don’t end up with so many sleepers for newborns and nothing for when the child quickly grows out of them. (like really quickly).

This would be a total of 4 sleepers, and should be within your given price range. Stick to fun colours, why not red, orange, blue, green, etc…..regardless of age. Especially for the older suits. I would be dead sick of yellow after a week!

I also like the bathtub, wash cloth idea, but this works really well for clothing.

Here are a few suggestions on items you can get and stay within your budget... what I normally do when someone I know has not registered is buy a baby bathtub, around $9 then fill it with the shampoo (Johnson & Johnson) usually is parents favorites, or body wash, some washcloths, and a towel either white, yellow, or green, most stores like target or walmart have ones that have little duckies or froggies on them.. then you celeaphane and wrap it that way so its see through and put a big bow.. always looks nice and makes it look like you got them a lot for such a low price

A gift card...But for some reason I hate giving them! Alot of stores have yellow things...Thats what I usually give if someone does not know the gender. You can usually find oneises or sleepers in yellow. You Could also Give a few packs of diapers and wipes...Those are always much appreciated! Personally I like recieving things for my children That can be used in the future...Like buy clothes in 3-6 or 6-9 months...Or Buy Diapers in size 2...And If you would like to buy a toy buy one for 6 months + Everyone always buys newborn stuff! Good Luck!

I just had my baby shower in May, and i got alot of bath products, etc. There was alot of stuff that i didn't get off my registry. So they stuff i got to much of or that i didn't want i just took to babysrus and got store credit for. I then got everything i needed. So it would be good to give a gift card. or if she has a registry. Heres a few things that i didn't return because i know the baby is going to need it, baby wipes, shower robe, baby laundry detergent. If you get a gift bag pill it with a photo album, wipes, pacifiers, laundry detergent

You've got some really good ideas--

Bigger sizes in clothing.... My brothers were all huge when they were born... 8+ pounds... yeah, the newborn stuff wasn't going to be fitting... and even if the baby is small, they ALWAYS grow, so the baby will fit it eventually!

Something for Mommy....

Anything that could possibly make the new mother's life easier--
a Boppy for feeding time (dunno how much they cost, though)
baby shampoo
diaper wipes
a gift card
baby towels (they have a little hood in the corner)
socks
onesies (bigger sizes, plain white, go to some other stores and look for cute prints- alphabet, polka dots, stars.... I just like them because they keep that little tummy covered!).....

Get an old fashioned brown teddy bear that is super soft and put him in a basket with nuetral beige ultra soft baby blanket, and some white onsies, and socks, and skull caps, and binkys, and some travel size lotions and oils. This is doable for about 30-35 dollars. Teddy foes in the middle and you do it up like a gift basket and get cello wrap, tie with a multicolor pastel bow!!

Get something for the parents!!! Everyone gets stuff for the baby, but always forgets about the mother and father. I like getting things from Bath and Body Works or Victorias Secret. The mom needs to remember that she's a person without her child around, and a few minutes alone in the bathroom with some nice smelling bath stuff is a great rejuvinator.

i love giving the medicine box-mylecon drops, tylenol, motrin, baby oragel, a small bottle of perioxide and a travel size box of q tips (for the cord-i never had perioxide and the small box is nice to have in the nursery), diaper cream, etc. It's things that you never think to get yourself unless your child is up screaming at 3:00 in the morning and you run to walmart! You can wrap them up nicely in a little box and they can leave it on the changing table!
