As Mark was getting at there, minerals are not much use in the ground. It's like dying with a load of money in the bank--that's useless too.

I'm not sure, but why would you want minerals to be protected from mining? Minerals have such a wide variety of uses in our society, such as gold for jewelry and electronics to things like emery for sandpaper and coal for energy. These are all products that benefit man.
What should be of concern is how those minerals are extracted from the earth. Strip mining of coal and cyanide laden run-off from gold mining are very harmful to the environment. Environmentally friendlier methods for extracting these minerals from the Earth should be adopted.

Protect them from what?
Do you have a computer? That takes minerals to make and coal to run.
Do you have a car or ride a bus? See above...

What Canada is guilty of is selling off our resources to foreign companies and in the case of China foreign nations. When we run out, then what?

Mining is one of Canada's bread and butter exports. I doubt there will be any protection laws, etc...
