Economics got started in the dim past of human history, the first time people began to exchange things they had for things they needed from other people. Then somebody had the bright idea of using money--a symbol for value that people could exchange more easily and that goes back to the pre-Christian and even pre-Hebrew era in the Middle East. Gold and silver were reliable mediums of exchange but sea shells and even immovable rocks have been used as well. The study of the economy has been going on for a couple of centuries, lots of various theories, but truly scientific study of economics began with John Maynard Keynes, a British economist who laid the groundwork for moderation of the business cycle.

Economy started when one person discovered that he or she could do something well enough that others wanted him to do it for them. So barter started. Trading goods. You give me an animal, and I will take the meat, but make shoes for you from the skin.
