This is my three. 1) Dwight Gooden 2) Darryl Strawberry 3) Steve Howe. All threee had potential be all time greats & they blew it b/c they felt that taking drugs was much more important. Very sad.

Gooden and Strawberry are the two who always jump to mind. Not all their troubles were of their own making, but a lot of them were. Doc should have three NL CYAs on his home trophy wall and, soon if not yet, a plaque in Cooperstown making note of his 275 wins and 3500 strikeouts. Darryl's destiny would be similar, two NL MVPs, a plaque, and a spot high on the all-time home run list somewhere north of 600.

And they both deprived us of getting to watch those two players.

Brien Taylor will always remain the great unknown. Lots of contracts come with various "don't do these stupid things" clauses, but Taylor's case should have been the genesis (and may be, though I've never heard of such) for draftee bonuses being subject to similar "don't do stupid things" requirements with pro-rated forfeiture of said bonuses for violations. Make the big money contingent upon non-stupid behavior for some three or four years; if the kids are worth several millions, impose some sensible safeguards.

Because, yeah, getting in a bar fight is stupid.

the 1st one i seen replaced into Gooden. I disagree with Joe Charboneau blowing it. He got here out of nowhere to make the Indians in 1980 and at last gained Rookie of the three hundred and sixty 5 days. the reason he did no longer have a outstanding occupation replaced into because of the fact of back issues. something completely out of his administration in assessment to the three that Scooter pronounced. i'm going to show one extra call that hasn't been stated yet. Brien Taylor. He replaced into drafted #a million well-known via the Yankees and had an extremely vivid destiny until he have been given in a bar combat and injured his arm requiring surgical technique. via the way somebody pronounced Steve Chilcutt. Taylor and Chilcutt are the only #a million well-known recommendations (that are no longer nevertheless taking part in) that for the period of no way made the Majors. i assume "Shoeless" Joe Jackson merits some point out right here besides. think of how good Bo Jackson would have been if he merely concentrated on baseball.

I'm going to say Steve Howe. Not only did he have a drug problem but he was the first player banned for life from baseball because of it. And unlike Strawberry and Gooden, Howe's drug use cost him his life.

Doc and Strawberry are very good picks. I'll throw Brien Taylor [1st overall selection in 1991 draft] in there, along with Josh Hamilton, although he could smother a good career. just a delayed one. Josh Hancock decided to get drunk and drive, so he threw his career away in my mind. Elijah Dukes is on his way onto this list if he doesn't get his act together. Delmon Young too.

so besides your 3, i'll go:
1) Brien Taylor
2) Josh Hancock
3) Josh Hamilton
i'm sure theres more

-Jose Conseco-had so much talent when he started but got greedy and threw it all away when he started taking sterionds
-darryl strawberry-also so much potential to be good, not the best but good, and threw it away for sterionds
-jason giambi-he was good when he started but then he took sterionds(he admitted it which is better then most so i have major respect for him) and cant play well anymore because he got so used to playing on steriods all the natural talent is gone
