If you are asking what are the different areas of practice, the list would be lengthy. Pretty much every area where there is a civil right and civil/criminal wrong. There are so many areas of the law that many lawyers will specialize in a limited few. Some will do general practice (pretty much anything), but they will likely not be as efficient. Note that does not mean not as effective. There are some very effective general practice attorneys that may or may not be able to act as quickly as a large firm (with several lawyers working on a case), but would be able to just as effective of a job.

In law school, lawyers are educated on certain required areas, and the state where a lawyer practices requires a lawyer to pass their exam (with some exceptions). Numerous other areas of practice would be narrow subsections or merged sections. In general, states require lawyers to be "competent" (which may simply mean, knowing the basics plus knowing how to find the information necessary) to represent clients in the following areas:

Criminal Law
Family Law
Tort Law (personal injury, mass torts, wrongful death, etc.)
Wills/Trusts/Estates
Property Law
Contract Law (including sales of goods and leases)
Secured Transactions Law (mortgages)
Payment Systems Law (checks, electronic funds transfers)
Corporations / Partnerships / Agency Law
Criminal Procedure
Civil Procedure
Constitutional Law
Rules of Evidence

Some states have additional areas you are responsible for:

Texas - Oil & Gas (which is really property + contracts)

New Mexico - Indian (Native) Law (which is probably a combination of constitutional law and civil procedure)

Hope that helps!
