I have two children with my ex-husband, my only marriage, and kept his name after the divorce for that reason. He nor I never re-married, and some love remained, but there were some serious problems that needed to be addressed. Recently i was filling out some paperwork and when it asked my status, i was unsure as to what is the correct answer. (I had been advised that when it comes to financial aid applications for the kids for college, however to go with widowed.) Does anyone know what is correct?

I can see why you would feel a loss after his death. It seams like he was still very important to you, even after the divorce. Legally, I would assume you are divorced. I think the legal paper trail would agree. Emotionally, I can see how you would identify with widows. Sorry for your loss.

You're divorced. The death of your ex came after the divorce. If you say you are widowed, the children will receive more financial aid. However, this is fraud. Widowed means that your husband died. In this case, your ex husband died. Legally, you are not a widow.

I'd say to answer with whichever would help you most on paperwork, but since you were divorced before he passed away, then you are divorced. It seems like you'd only be widowed if you were actually married to him at the time he died.

You are divorced. You could be only by called a widow if you were still married at the time of his death. Which, in this case you were already divorced. Hence, you are divorced.

You were not married to him when he died so that makes you still a divorced person . Not a widow.

Tell men you are widowed - on average, widows are a lot less crazy than some divorcees - but legally, you are divorced.

Your are divorced. You were not married when he died, so you are not a widow. It would be illegal to call yourself widowed, so don't lie on the applications.

You can't be widowed unless you were married when your husband died. Thus you will remain divorced until you remarry and get another shot at widowhood.
