However since having this done theyve made alterations regarding beneficiaries to this document without a legal witness cosigning the alterations they will have to have to redo a new document and have it witnessed. Am i right or have i given them the wrong information

If the will has added codicils etc, then yes - it must be witnessed. If there are a lot of changes, then probably better to have a new will drawn up.

I am not a lawyer, but I would think that any changes would have to be witnessed and noted by an attorney in order to stand up in court. Especially, if they made the changes without notifying the beneficiaries - I think it would just sound fishy after they passed and would prompt a lawsuit that could be easy to win.

Any change needs to be witnessed. But the witness does not need to be a justice of the peace.
