As long as it was purchased legally you can hand it in to be in accordance with the laws or perhaps you could take ownership of it. You'll have to look into your local laws regarding this, most likely if he was the original legal owner he was or is required to surrender the weapon upon being convicted, there would probably be some time period to comply like a month.
FYI: Filing down the serial number does not work technicians can and do recover the serial number since the impact of stamping it goes deep into the metal beyond the visible depressions.

You're probably going to get in less trouble by turning it in than getting caught disposing of it any other way and getting caught as a felon with a gun.

If husband bought the gun, legally, then husband has to surrender the weapon or face violation charges.
If husband bought the gun from Joe at Barbs Grill in a phone booth, husband still has to surrender the weapon.
I can appreciate and see some sense in the dump five miles at sea, yet that action is a violation of the law. double pooched.

Is the weapon registered to your husband? If it is then he needs to take care of that. Don't just give it away, take it some place and sell it. You can take it to a gun shop, or to a pawn shop. Whatever you do, don't listen to the folks in here who tell you to change the serial number and all of that mess. That is illegal. Just make sure that YOU are the person handling the weapon and not him when you go to sell it.

Hand it to the police with all its licenses and papers
don't drop it anonymously, than the police will be suspicious and do a search on the gun and your background
You can also sell to a second hand gun store but get some sort of paper that proves you don't have that gun any more
I agree with John96

Sell it, and make sure the paperwork gets filed, or turn it in to the Police/Sheriffs Department in your area. Call ahead and they can explain the procedures.
Better idea. Keep the gun and sell the Husband maybe....

Walk about 4 miles into the bush and bury it about 3 feet down and drag a log across the top so no one even thinks of poking around there?
Or buried in a shallow stream under the rocks so it will rust away? or melt it down with an oxy acetylene torch or cutting torch? or overboard 5 miles out to sea.

Take it to a gun dealer and sell it. Make some money on the resale.

The best and proper way to get rid of it would be to turn it over to the local police.
If the gun itself is suspect or not entirely legal may I suggest a weekend fishing trip to a very remote and deep lake.

You, not your husband, need to immediately take it to a police station. Tell them you no longer wish to own the weapon, they will dispose of it for you. This will insure that the weapon does not fall into the hands of someone with ill intent through a private sale.
