I would say so.

First of all, they are the ones thinking. You can't control their thoughts.

Second, whatever they are thinking about is simply their opinion.

Thirdly, what people think is based on their own stupidity and preconceptions and something they think about you based on some kind of action, which you have already done. You cannot change the past.

So, its a total waste of time.

It's not stupid to worry about what people think of you because it will keep you in check from doing things that would be disrespectful to yourself. But there are times when people can "over worry" about what others think of them 1) because like you said, most people do not do it that often. Usually the thought of someone I do not know but think of lasts for about 5 seconds and then their gone. But there are some pathetic idiots that bank their lives on judging people and always pointing out "mistakes" on others. So you should worry what people think if you are going to do something that would degrade you, but if it's about what color shirt your wearing, forget them.

Yes its stupid because 9 times out of 10 the person or persons are not even thinking of you. Its like the classic Gary Larson comic where the guy is laying in bed thinking about a girl and the next frame shows the girl thinking about ice cream. People are so self absorbed they don't have time to think of other people. You know the people who like you or dislike you and they are the only ones who matter in life.

You would be surprised at how little people think of anyone except themselves. People are, in general, self-absorbed.

I would say that even though people don't think of you very often, it's still silly to worry about what they think. You answer to yourself and your god, so why worry what others are going to think? In the grand scheme of things, other people's opinions of you are very rarely of any value.

Yup. As far as coming to that conclusion, just notice how much time you spend thinking about yourself versus how much time you think about other people.

I think it's more accurate to say 'it's stupid to worry about what people think of you, because they're going to do it anyway'! No matter who you present yourself as, somebody will have a problem with it.

its hard not to worry about what people think of you. and i doubt they think of you/me as often as we worry about! everyone is different and i think the average joe lives and let lives as long as we do so within the letter of the judicial and moral codes.
i try to live my life so i won't be embarrassed if my past comes back to haunt me.
i try to be honest, work hard and contribute something to society.
i truly believe in the 'everything i need to know about life, i learned in kindergarten' ethic and i try to live it.

In most cases it probably is true. You should focus on what you think of yourself not what others think (when they do) about you. Good luck.
