You have asked a very complex question. Microsoft never seems to know if they are going or coming with the Genuine Advantage Tool. (They software that validates your platform).

If you know or have the CD package that your last CD came in the registration key is on the side of the package.

You shouuld try and use the key that you had in your last laptop. (The risk is that it will not work, being Microsoft copies all of your hardware).

I will give you an example. I replaced my motherboard in my computer and reinstalled the same Windows XP Pro. that I purchased. The key would not work no matter what I did.

In the end I just gave up and went out and purchased a small mouse from a computer store, so that they could sell me the Windows XP Pro., (OEM). Alot less money and reinstalled the platform with the new key.

You may have to do the same, or put the platform back into your old laptop where the key was to start.

depends, some OEM cds need it, others u can use any cd key.

sometimes u can call ur vendor and tell them the serial numbers and they will supply u with the activation key, it is something i will look into :)
