My buddies and I had this debate. I said David Ruffin. The others said Luther Vandrose and Eddie Levert. Feel free to voice your own opinion but also answer which is the best among the three.

PLEASE CHOOSE AMONG THE THREE AS WELL AS YOUR PERSONAL OPINION. Prince is my all time favorite but I don't think he can be ranked among the best.

One thing about Luther is, he doesn't sing w/alot of passion and emotion. Unlike David, who belts those songs out. For example listen to "I could never love another (after loving you.)" By The Temptations.

Oh my there are so many great R&B singers heard and unheard of. Including the three you just put down.

I believe that David Ruffin was the best. David possessed a voice that can't be copied or manipulated. He was the real voice of the Temptations. Most of their famous hits were sung by David Ruffin. Think about it "My Girl"," I Wish It Would Rain," "Since I Lost My Baby"," Beauty Is Only Skin Deep", "I'm Losing You", "All I Need" etc. As soon as he left or should I say forced to leave the Tempts that's when they started going down hill. Due to the fact that there a drastic change in music during the seventies The Temptations without David had to change their image and that was when they were not taken seriously. All in all David=The Voice.

Sam Cooke is also one of the best singers and pioneers of all time his voice blends with whatever genre he sings. He paved the way for a lot of soul singers. Without Sam there would be no Motown, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, Al Green or any other soul and R&B singer.

Between those 3:DAVID,LUTHER,EDDIE..I would have to say LUTHER!!..not to be rude or anything.Luther was in a field all by himself. Eddie Levert and David Ruffin were before him.It would have been better if u had people like marvin gaye, teddy pendergrass, barry white, and others in the same field as david and eddie. But Luther just to soul and urban music to another level. There will never be another Luther Vandross. Don't get me wrong,Eddie and David did their thing to!! they were some bad men of soul!! but i wouldn't have put luther along side them.

Sam Cooke, David Ruffin, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, love them all and they were/are great singers but so were/are Luther and Eddie. If I had to choose between the three you gave, while it hurts and only because you said to choose, it would be David Ruffin (OMG). God Bless.

Not exactly an answer to your question, but I would like to list the male R&B and soul singers with the best vocal abilities (IMHO) from the 50's and 60's. I put each in the decade when he released his first record. If the artist began his career singing with a group, I listed him first when he sang with that group.

50's(55-59) James Brown, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Dee Clark, Jackie Wilson, Clyde McPhatter, Brook Benton, Jerry Butler & Curtis Mayfield( Impression), Marvin Junior(Dells), Bobby Bland, Frankie Lymon, Little Anthony, Jesse Belvin, Tony Williams(Platters), Little WIllie John, Jimmy Reed, Lloyd Price, Chuck Willis (I'm leaving out one of my all time favorites, Johnny Ace, because he died prior to 1955)

60's - Johnny Adams, Arthur Alexander, William Bell, Solomon Burke, James Carr, Clarence Carter, General Johnson (Showstoppers, Chairmen Of The Board), Gene Chandler,Otis Clay, Don Covay, Tyrone Davis, Lee Dorsey, Ron Banks (Dramatics), Eddie Floyd, Levi Stubbs(Four Tops). Marvin Gaye, Eddie Holman,, Chuck Jackson, Ben E. King, Little Milton, Jerry Butler(solo career), Smokey Robinson(Miracles), Wilson Pickett, Lou Rawls, Otis Redding, David Ruffin(Temprtations), Eddie Kendricks(Temptation), Sam Moore & David Prater(Sam & Dave),Joe Simon, Perrcy Sledge, Sly Sylvester(Sly & The Family Stone), Edwin Srarr, Billy Stewart, Bobby Taylor, Jonnie Taylor, Little Johnny Taylor, Bobby Womack, Stevie Wonder, O.V. Wright, Whoever the lead singer was for the Isley Brothers and for the Delfonics,

I know these singers may be extremely "old school" to you but these men made some of the greatest music (not just R&B and soul) of the last half of the 20th century. Their recording are definitely worth checking out, especially if you're interested in R&B and soul history.
