You've gotta wonder how a major network could send a crew to cover a major region of the USA -- specifically, Oklahoma's only mountain range -- and then blatantly misspell it several times? Talk about NOT doing one's homework!

Do YOU know the **correct** spelling? It's not the "Wichita" Mountains. It's the "_____" Mountains.

To "Skydog70" -- Oklahoma is "MY" boring state? Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm a former New Yorker who still lives 600 miles from Oklahoma, and has never lived there. And I'm guessing that with all the tornadoes it gets, it's anything BUT boring. It's the tornado hunters' Mecca!

As for erring... yeah. That's an error of the magnitude of adding 2 + 2 to get 7!
It was SLIPSHOD, plain and simple!

To "Elaine P" -- I see what you're saying, and would agree with you 100%, except that I don't think you realize the MAGNITUDE of their error. It's no less ludicrous than if a film crew were to do a piece on Mt. Kilimanjoro, and then throughout the piece, when it aired, the place was identified as being Mt. St. Helens! It was a totally slipshod error. A case of total incompetence. Major incompetence.

To "Metimoteo" -- ABC *did* spell it "Wichita," but that is INcorrect. If you put the correct spelling into Google, you'll find 159,000 sites that deal with or mention it. Starting with this one:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ouachita_Mountains

To "Metimoteo" -- Wow!! I have long been familiar with the Ouachita Mountains, and I-35 crosses them. But never knew that there were hills of that magnitude in the southwestern part of the state. And called "Wichita." If GMAs piece was about THOSE, then I apologize to them. And if that's the case, someone please pass me my hat, a serving of crow, and a fork!

I watched GMA Weekend this morning and I heard Bill Weir promo the piece on the Wichita Mountains but I didn't watch the segment. I turned to another channel. However, I'm confused by your question. According to you, the people at ABC apparently spelled it W-i-c-h-i-t-a, which is correct. You're not confusing the Wichita Mountains with the Washita Battlefield are you?

OK, I entered the word Ouachita Mountains on Wikipedia and found this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ouachita_Mountains

But I also entered Wichita Mountains and found this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wichita_Mountains

Again, I didn't watch the piece on GMA Weekend so I admit up front my ignorance about what region they were talking about, but the Ouachita Mountains are in southeastern Oklahoma and the Wichita Mountains are in southwestern Oklahoma. I'm guessing the piece covered the area in southwestern Oklahoma--the Wichita Mountains. You may have mistakenly thought they were covering the southeastern range--the Ouachita Mountains.

I went to the ABC News website today and finally found a link to the story that was broadcast on GMA Weekend on Sunday. It is about the Wichita Mountains in southwestern Oklahoma and not the Ouachita Mountains in southeastern Oklahoma. Here's the link:

Hey! The typing is done by a human being. Think of the millions of misspellings they don't make! Proper nouns (names) are often difficult even for experts to spell. Show a little compassion. When a typist is doing subtitles during a show, there is no time for spell check or revision. To remind you of a famous quote: "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." There's a reason we still know this after 2000 years.

The Wichita Mountains are beautiful. I hope that sky doggy doo doo continues to stay away, and to live in his slummy neighborhood where it's "not boring".
