The overthrow of the Shah turned Iran away from the West and secularism to embrace Islamic fundamentalism and the joining of church and state. It has seriously impacted Iran's economy and condemned Iran to a more restrictive, unenlightened existence.

The answers in the first response are accurate but should be multiplied by infinity squared. The difference between a free (even corrupt regime) that is progressive and is moving toward freedom for all and women's rights, etc. and living under strict Sharia Law is unimaginable to most Westerners. All news is controlled by the state which in turn is controlled by the religious fanatics. Of course there are some old Persians who still live there semi-nomadic lives almost as always.

In addition to the economic, educational and social regression, Iran's oil wealth was put into the hands of the top 3 ayatollahs and using this wealth controls the majority population by renting fascist thugs it calls military and police.

It turned the people of Iran from a moderate (but increasingly progressive) path to increased individual freedom, to a rewritten perspective of their own history. One in which they have reverted to a corruption of medieval culture where a male dominated society force everyone to adhere to the Islamic approach to the world. An approach in which everyone must fit within their religious oriented government or die. Such things as open education and believe in the people are driven out.
