I'm trying to do some research for my boyfriend's father who was in the US Air Force in the 1960's and was stationed in what he has referred to as 'French Speaking Congo'. Since this is a surprise for him, I can't ask him details, but after doing historical research, I'm lost as to which former colony he is referring to. French Equatorial Africa? Democratic Republic of Congo? I just need to know what country it was in the 1960's so that I can download accurate data and graphics. (flags, maps, etc.) Can any history buffs out there help me out?
(ASAP for Father's Day? :) )

thanks!

There are two Congos in Central Africa. Congo Brazzaville and Congo Leopoldevil/Kinshasa. Congo Brazzaville used to be a French Colony. But Congo Leopold evil was a Belgian Colony. Although both speak french and both names are Congo, their capital city is different. One is Brazzaville and the other one is Kinshasa/Leopoldevil.

There was a civil war in Congo Leopoldevil then, Kinshasa later in late 1960. As a result, United Nations was revolved to resolve the "Katanga crisis". US Air Force was also involved through UN. Therefore, I will assume your boy friend's father might be in Congo Leopoldivil / Kinshasa (I think, the Kinshasa name is Changed to Congo again ). Any way, focus your research on Belgian Congo not the French one. Good luck.

Don't you think that you're being a little over emotional. "cheese eating surrender monkeys", "sucking up"? 1 Maybe its a better plane. Are you really suggesting that you would put US lives at risk for the sake of jingoism? 2 Are you suggesting that Boeing has the monopoly on the best technology and planes? 3 If they are say so close it doesn't matter then is what foreign policy issue is at stake worth the benefit ? Not enough information. 4 Free trade means trade goes both ways. If it doesn't the consequences could be nasty and more Americans would be hurt than disadvantage by this deal. 5 Keep in mind there will be industry set up in US to compensate. Give the US negotiators some more credit.

The CIA was active in the then Belgian Congo, which was mainly French-speaking. First, to defeat the elected Prime Minster Lumumba and to help the Katanga secession, later to assist the dictator Mobutu. And I know that at the beginning, the early 60s, they operated from across the Congo river, in Brazaville, the capital of Congo-Brazaville.
