In 1968 new shillings and florins (2 shillings) were issued as 5 new pence and 10 new pence coins
The old ten shilling note was replaced with a 50 new pence coin in October 1969
Full decimalisation occured on 15th February 1971, when the copper coins were replaced with decimal denominations.
Some of the pre-decimal coins were still used, eg the old sixpence continued in use until 1980, worth 2.5 new pence. Old 1 and 2 shilling coins were still used as 5p and 10p respectively
In 1982 the word "new" was dropped from the penny coins

In1971 you didn't get a night out for a shilling. I used to spend £3 on drinks and £2 on a curry. With my mates, one of us was always sick in the curry house before we paid the bill. Those were the days! Given that there were 12 pence to a shilling and 20 shillings to a pound. If you spent £2, 5 shillings and 9 pence, how much change would you get from a five pound note? Everyonne in the UK (almost) used to be able to calculate the answer to that and similar wuestions in their heads. (The answer is £2, 14 shillings and 3 pence).

Thought it was 1970 but 71s probably right. I was working in a chemist at the time and people were very confused. Not sure it cost a shilling for a night out and fish n chips on the way home but it was about a shilling for fish n chips! Lager about 11p a pint!

1971 - I remember it well - it was such a big issue! A bit like all the fuss when Europe got the Euro. I think the only way it really affected me was when the tooth fairy called - instead of a shiny sixpence I got 2 1/2p!
