now, whenever I give her a bottle she chews on the nipple and spits the milk out the sides of her mouth. She is teething(has 2 bottom ones) I dont know if this has anything to do with it. Is there anything I can do about this?? It seems like she is spitting half the bottle out and I am having to feed her more and more!

If she's teething, give her a dose of Tylenol about 30 minutes before feeding to ease mouth pain. Otherwise, keep giving her things to gnaw on - like a cold, wet, washcloth. (Keep one in the fridge in a baggie.)

If this is still a problem after trying these ideas - put a little of her formula into a sippy cup and see if she takes it that way. She might just be losing interest in the bottle itself. Don't stop the formula though - for another six months, it's her primary source of nutrition and fluids. (The solids and other stuff are for learning and practice.)

This is normal, and will pass.

Try placing a bib or towel under chin or those half bottle spills. You can also try to feed her her bottle only when you know she is hungry and not before. She may be more interested in sucking than chewing if she needs her hunger satisfied. Don't hold off the feeding my any means, just don't feed her when she isn't showing signs of hunger.

Before she feeds give her some time to have a good chew on something firm or cold (or both) to help ease the pain, and then allow her to go nuts for the bottle.

Think, if a breastfeeding mother was getting a good chew what would she do??
Pull the baby off, and firmly say no. Wait a moment and then place the baby back on the boob. You may try to think about this as well.

Best wishes.

My 6 month old son began chewing the nipple and I found a great product that lets him chew, and not wasting formula. It is by munchin, it has the shape of a passifier, but where the nipple is you fill it with frozen fruit, ice cubes, or whatever you want that they might want to chew on. Like a chew toy for babies. I will give you the link to babiesrus.com. Just a new product that I found that my son loves also, nothing to do with the chewing, but it is amazing. It is the podee bottle system. I will send you the link to that too. It is a bottle that allows you child to drink while sitting up, on the belly, any which way, no limits. My son loves it more than anything, right now he is fighting which one of the two he wants. I hope this helped in some way.

Is she on solid foods as well? Perhaps she is not getting "full" from her bottle. Maybe you should give her baby cereal, and other baby foods to help compensate.
