Mythology is intended to explain nature events and history and is largely based on tradition, but rarely has its origins in anything real.
Fable is a fictitious story that has a teaching behind it. Every fable uses symbology to achieve this objective.
A legend (Latin, legenda, "things to be read") is a narrative of human actions that are perceived both by teller and listeners to take place within human history and to possess certain qualities that give the tale verisimilitude. Legend, for its active and passive participants, includes no happenings that are outside the realm of "possibility", defined by a highly flexible set of parameters, which may include miracles that are perceived as actually having happened, within the specific tradition of indoctrination where the legend arises, and within which it may be transformed over time, in order to keep it fresh and vital, and realistic.

Mythology (a study): 1. the collected body of the legends of a people in which are recorded their beliefs about their origin, gods, heroes, etc.; 2. the science of such legends; 3. a book about them.
Fable: 1. a fictitious story, particularly one that is intended to teach a useful or moral truth in which animals may talk and act like human beings; 2. a myth or legend; 3. the plot of a dramatic or epic poem; 4. a fictitious statement: specifically, a false statement,; lie; 5. gossip; idle talk; to write or tell stories of ones own invention; lie; to invent; relate falsely.
Legend: 1. a story, often telling of miracles or wonders handed down from the past, especially one connected with a person or event in authentic history, of doubtful certainty, but popularly believed to be true; a tradition; 2. the words of an inscription, motto, title, or the like as on a coin or under an illustration in a book.
Some differences, a lot of similarities. The key word is stories. And stories told over time tend to take on a life all their own, any truth lost in the retelling.

Joseph Campbell says true myths are religious tales and often have rituals associated with them. They tell of the gods causing something. They try to explain origins of natural phenomena. A legend is another type of fantasy tale that does not concern gods. It has heroes, rather than gods. A fable usually has animals behaving like men, rather than gods or human heroes, and has a moral. Aesop was a pioneeer of fables. Some of his fables have gods and humans. One has Heracles telling a man that the gods help those who help themselves.

fables are basically short stories that teach lesson through experiences of characters that often are fantastic (i.e. talking animals)
legends tend to be one-shot stories or lyric/prose poetries that narrate either the origin of things, the extraordinary exploits of individuals or explain certain events.
a myth(ology) is more complex and has many mediums. Mythologies of various cultures basically try to do most of the above literature, but interwoven into a main "story" inhabited by deities, demigods, supernatural beings, etc. most of which the people of that time actually believe to be true and worship as their gods.
