My husband and I went to this little out of the way Steakhouse in Between Rogue River and Gold Hill Oregon for our anniversary. It is actually located near Foots Creek (chapel?). It is small, but it sits on the Rogue River and had amazing food and service. The meal (1995) cost around $25 per person without drinks. I thought it was expensive, but found out later it was well worth the price.

We did not order an appetizer, thank goodness. For dessert we ordered, I believe, it was Black Forest Cake.

The meal included steamed vegetables, baked potato, and a Filet Mignon. The steak was huge, but delicious. It melted in your mouth and had the best flavor. The potato was over-sized too and the vegetables were cooked to perfection. The staff was very attentive while still offering us privacy.

Everything including the atmoshpere was just great.

I have eaten at several steak houses since and still have found nothing that compares. The closet steak I have found to equaling its taste is Ruth's Chris.

It's a chain, so I can imagine how ridiculous this sounds, but Ruth's Chris--specifically the location on Dearborn in downtown Chicago.

It has slacked a little, but when I first went there I was just a kid. The waitstaff was excellent. Not invasive, but always there with a refill. Friendly, without pandering.

How do I describe the food? It's steak man, delicious, world class steak fried in this buttery medium. The type of steak that it's a sin to put steak sauce on. The best meat, prepared to perfection, and served no nonsense. Everything else is average (their pork chops are sweet, with this apple stuff on them--not a fan). I'd go someplace else for desert (boring). The au gratin (sp?) 'taters is good though. And how can you screw up a baked potato? They don't. I like mine with the works (some how a 'tater at RC's tastes better, I must say). Actually, I once had a fantastic artichoke salad there, so I can recco that.

RC rules: first, don't get anything but the steak for your entree--and the best in my opinion is the least expensive, the top sirloin (16 oz. I believe). Second, don't order it over medium--the old waitstaff would let you order "medium-well" only after pleading with you not to. It seems to me these days they are overcooking it medium, so maybe try medium rare (there will be a little blood). For me (when I'm at RC's), even though the blood is not aesthetically pleasing, if there isn't a little in the plate, it was over-cooked. The amount of flavor you get makes up for the...unpleasantness.

Plus, if you don't know, when you order "well done" in any place they give you the oldest, worst cut they have in the house.

I do think the place is slipping though, and I can't speak for other locations beside Dearborn Ave. Ruth's Chris's (yes it is RUTH'S Chris) HQ is in New Orleans, site of the first one. They couldn't help but be effected by Katrina. And chains, in my experience, seem to naturally descend in quality, which they sacrifice for consistent mediocrity.

Still, best steak I ever had. And the place has this baseline quality that leaves you satisfied even on an off night.

Outback Steakhouse

They have a terrific choice of appetizers to start with (bloomin onion, wings, cheese fries, shrimp, etc).

Their steaks are incredible. I've eaten at many places. I had a $50 steak at a fancy restaraunt and it wasn't anywhere near as good as Outback's steaks which are all under $20. For an entree, try any cut of steak (Filet or Ribeye if you have the $$, Sirloin if low on cash).

They also have great desserts like cheesecake, sundae type things, and such.

Two can eat for less than $45

A little place in the midwest. The best prime rib ever! For appetizers I'd go with the combo platter. Fried potato peels, cheeseballs, zucchini, mushrooms, I can't remember what else was fried! And I always got ranch and cheese to go with it. And hashbrowns with cheese and onion. (You could even add green olives!) And there was an excellent salad bar. I never had the dessert, but it was the usuals like French Silk or Coconut Cream. And all for about $35 for two!

Al Biernats in Dallas,Texas. Its a fancy place with wine priced from about $25-$2995.00 per bottle. Wish I had the money for the '64 Lafitte-Rothchilds Bordeaux.
If you order a steak all sides are ordered separately. I had the 12 ounce Fillet Mignon($45), a specialty salad($18), a potato dish($12). I had dessert too but to be honest with you, after polishing off all of that food and wine that I was delirious.
Well worth the money. I didn't even need a knife for the steak as it was aged to perfection and as tender as butter!

Peter Luger's, when I was in N.Y. The steakhouse was so-so but it does'nt need to be good. the basement is filled with the best steaks that are being dry aged by their secret method. The taste is unbeatable.
