the temp gauge goes right up near the red which doesnt seem normal to me, the fan always kicks in and it cools back down to the middle. i could understand if i was driving it hard for like half hour but just a 10 min trip it will do this, is this probably going to end up as a head gasket, if so how much would it cost or could it be something else

Could be a faulty thermostat? Does the temp gauge drop if you stick the heater on??

Your fan doesn't kick in before it reach near middle, besides the thermostat, it could be a malfunctioning temperature sensor for the fan.

Recently, nissan sunny's temperature sensor would randomly not kick my fan on, resulting in boiling/steaming radiator water. My girlfriend says 'wow, my car is making smoke!!'.

almost certain to be the water pump, the impellor is made of plastic which cracks with the high temperatures it has to endure so it doesnt turn causing a loss of circulation of the coolant.
