what are the activities of philosophy?

They aren't activities but are the studies of philosophy. There are four primary things that philosophy attempts to solve. Here they are:

Ethics - how one should live ones life.
Metaphysics - what is a person's true (essential) nature.
Epistemology - what does one really know.
Logic - what are the correct principles of reasoning.

I would suggest you read up on the brief description given by wikipedia on philosophy to get you started found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philosophy but understand their is no ending to the debate as to what are the activities a philosopher should be engaging in.

"Activities" is the wrong word to use with philosophy. Philosophy is an intellectual exercise in which thinkers attempt to analyze fundamental human problems and find solutions by means of the intellect.
