I have found with life experience that the phrase "doing things right" usually means, I want it done my way. I have a family situation right now where a sister demanded that things be done her way or else. The way myself and my immediate family handled it was after much thought, discussion, research and we decided we were going to proceed by "doing the right thing". It caused a huge rift that still continues 4 years later. Sometimes choosing to do the right thing can be a lonely journey but none of us regret our decision.

Not very much. "Doing things right" is a more general phrase and denotes an attitude or philosophy of using correct procedures. If certain specific "things" were mentioned in the current context, you might use the phrase "doing the things right" if you wanted to refer to doing those specific things right.

doing the right things = being effective
