Good question. I think the only way society decides if someone is sane or not is if they dont fit a profile of the way people should be, a blue print of the way someones life should be and the way we live it .

Sanity, it's all a matter of degree, I feel. It is probably safe to say that one is sane when his/her long term ideas, life-style, and ambitions don't conflict drastically with what is in the best interest of the individual and with society as a whole.
There is a fine line, I think, between sanity and insanity. For example, a sane person is better able to do periodic reality-checks; an insane person doesn't ever feel the need for one. The insane state, I suspect, is a conscious condition where the individual is caught up some where between reality and being in the middle of a dream. It is all just a matter of degree.

The most accurate indicator of whether one is "sane" or "insane" is where he asks his question !
For example , asking in the "mental health" forums would indicate a normal , sane mind .
Asking in the "Astronomy & Space" forums would indicate a confused , and possibly insane mind .

The real answer is that only people who have bee classified as clinically insane, treated and then signed off as being sane can actually prove their sanity. Unfortunately this is akin to a UK car MOT in that it is only true at the time, it may not be true the following day.

If you think you are insane, then you you can safely assume that you are sane! If you keep putting your hand into your shirt and making like Napoleon, then you are nuttier than the average fruit cake!

Level of adjustment to society requirements?
But if a person is on a desert planet with nobody around I realy can't tell if sanity of mind has any meaning or should be defined.

you never know for sure...there in no such thing as insanity, there are merely some states of mind that aren't accepted by the majority. James Mark Platt

Sanity is relative.
Its a judgement call from people, who are assumed by society at large to be sane.
Check with the people who are given this responsibility, if in any doubt.
