The answers you got are almost perfect. But let me add one small detail.
The one inch is NOT the size those fishes are NOW. But you should find out the maximum size they can grow. For e.g. I have a 30 gallon tank and I have only 8 goldfishes and I plan to remove 2 from that because the orandas can grow pretty big!
So do some research on the Adult size of each species of your fish and then compute the tank gallon capacity and then the size.
Hope this helps.

about 30. now some fish swim on the bottom some in the middle and some on the top which gives your aquarium the balance, the cleaners are the workers they are the catfish family like pepper cats, albino cats glass catfish bristle nose are great for the glass you need about 10 to help keep your tank balanced.
small neon's and cardinal tetra's give the aquarium effect as these are schooling fish, along with other tetra's like widows and glow light or head and tail light tetra's
sharks are great for contrast the silver shark, the albino rainbow shark the red tail shark although these can be bullies
clown loaches are great for colour and effect a golden mystery snail bumble bee gobies are small but effective fish,
do not put too many fish in fish only 2 by 2 and wait 2 fish 2 weeks wait and fill your tank slowly add you plants and rocks before fish let stand 1 week. good fishing

I read somewhere that you are supposed to have one gallon of water per one inch of fish.
So, if one fish is about 3-5 inches long, you'll need 3-5 gallons of water for that one fish.
Do this math and figure out how many fish you can put in that tank.
P.S. How many gallons is the tank?
Cheers

try this connversion site, http://home.comcast.net/~jdieck1/volcalc.html
this will tell you how many gallons your tank is and do as the others have told you, 1inch of fish per gallon. But do you homework on the fish that you intend to get first and find out what their adult size is, their tank requirements and if they will be compatable with each other. Treat your fish as you would any other pet, and you will get years of enjoyment from them

It depends on a number of factors, do you have a filter? What size fish do you want??
Can you give a little more detail so i can tell you??
