Since astronomers began to deduce that some of the objects in the skies were other worlds, humans have been fascinated by the possibility that some of them might be able to support life.

We have come a long way in our technology, and we also know much more about those worlds, but we want to find life or signs of life for two basic reasons.

First we want to understand our world and our life forms better. Second, we would like to determine whether other worlds could support life forms like ours. This is useful not only for possible colonies, but also to provide other resources that can be used by our world.

You have a rather strange view of current political events. Who is "Belair?" Your butler, perhaps?

first off, i'm assuming that by Belair, you mean blair, who will not be primeminister any more in a few weeks, so you need not worry about him.
Also, the liklihood of anylife actually being INTELLIGENT is rather slim, and i doubt a few small bacteria are going to wage war on us all.

Also, why not? Any life we find could lead to huge benefits for life here. I mean, new medical treatments through deeper understanding of, for example, DNA. New green ways of running industry, and more. Even finding small bacterium, which is the most likely, will lead to huge benefits for us here.

Also, why not? I mean, wouldn't you like to know, out of pure curiousity (the trait that has kept humans surviving this long - so don't get rid of it now when we really need it) what is out there? Are we really unique? Wouldn't you do anything you could to find out?

We may find they are more advanced than us in areas of medicine and have more efficient ways of transport etc, this could help with terminal illnesses and help protect our planet. It could also have the opposite effect when they discover how we kill one another and pollute the earth of which we cannot live without... so maybe it’s not such a good idea!

Hey they could also teach a thing or two regarding ways of living peacefully and not so focused on greed and wealth...

We need to be looking at the posibility of finding new planets that can sustain human life. We also need a way to travel to these planets without dieing of old age on the way.

I hope NASA cracks it if they haven't already.

It's what humans do: we explore. Technology has driven our development since the earliest of times, and so it continues.
We still have many unanswered questions about the universe, its origin and the broad possibilities that might be called 'life'.

It is in all humans to explore....to see what is beyond....Christopher Colombus.....for example. Why is there reluctance to see what is beyond. Narrowmindedness and fear of the unknown will undoubtedly keep one in the dark ages, like it or not we our constantly evolving and hopefully will always proceed in a positive neverending search.Wars hunger starvation at home........look to change the stupid politics and politicians, but don"t curtail our need to explore and see what is beyond...i believe its human nature. Its amazing, its enlightening, Its the human experience. Its wonderful.

We can't afford another war here much less one on another world. Maybe the CIA will look into it for you?
