Our genetic structure...
We are so caught up with what humans can do (as opposed to other animals) that we have overstated it many times historically.
By definition, a species is one that can carry on genetic information (successfully mate) with others within that species.
Now, from a philosophical viewpoint, there are many ways of looking at it... I will not do extensive research here, but will say that humanism is the belief in the inherent greatness of each individual human being. To be human is to have compassion... Also, 'to err is to be human'. From my own point of view, humans are the beings on this earth that have the fortune (though that remains to be seen) to be able to control the earth with thought and intention, more than any other species, at this time...

Life is a state opposite death. Also, all life is set on a path (time) leading to death. Therefore, all living things inevitably end in death, and that is a path of imperfection. Humans are /human/ because they can err. However, humans are discrete from other animals with the possibility to reason more comprehensively.

I think what makes us human is the ability to ponder not only our own motives of behavior but that of other species.
