With a contract that high even a CY young might not live up to the expectations...
He would have to lead the Giants to the Pennant and at least a World Series appearance...

Barry Zito was never worth that money. He was the biggest name and best available pitcher on the market so teams ready and willing to spend over valued him. A good, solid pitcher, but not worth that contract. Last year in oakland he finished with a 3.83 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP (walks and hits to innings pitched ratio) this year in San Fran so far, 4.41 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. Not a great difference really.

I can remember a kid named Dwight Gooden AKA Dr. K, who was projected to be the greatest of all time by some zealous Mets fans. He was actually one of the Mets I liked as a kid, probably because he had the best nickname. But after his second year (1985), when he was just completely dominant, he was never the same pitcher. Really, after a few more decent years, he became pretty average, and lost it around 1992 or 93. I had just started following baseball in 1985, and I really thought he was going to be the greatest ever. I never saw hitters look so overmatched in that one year when he won his only Cy Young. He was rated even higher than some other guy named Clemens. He had a short comeback with the Yankees, but drugs and poor work ethic was his eventual downfall. He never reached his true potential.

Barry is a professional he will bounce back, Barry played 7 years in the Junior circuit with the San Fran Neighbors the Oakland A's so give him some time and let him learn the league, He will be back, all good pitchers bounce back after an off year. will he live up to what he is earning, don't even get me started (my opinion) on baseball salaries, they are just absurd.

How many big FA pitchers live up to their contracts?
The problem for the Giants, is if they compete it will be because Zito is their 3rd best pitcher, they need Cain and Lincecum to be aces, because Zito isn't.
It was bit of a waste of money, Zito is a quality pitcher, but not an ace. Pure and simple.

You have to give him time, he is going from a league where he knew all the hitters, to one where he does know them. Not that you can't do it but ? how many Cy Young winners have won a second Cy Young a few years later? Give him time to learn the league, he'll be ok.

I think that in recent years, he's gotten too cocky, and it's breaking him down. He didn't fair too bad while he was still in Oakland, but since they uprooted him, he's been slacking. The Giants havent had good seasons recently, so they looked to Barry as one of the "stars" of the team, and he can't take the heat.

Only time will tell, but as of right now it looks as though the Giants got a bad deal.

I sure so! I doubt it but I think if he was on a different team (larger market; braves, yankees, tigers...) he would get more recognition and therefor would fell like he was watched more and feel the need to perform better!
