Most laptops come with a "recovery disc set" whch resets EVERYTHING to how it came out the box, if you don't have this contact the manufacturer of the laptop to find out if they can provide one, if not ask whoever had the laptop originally.
Other than that you'll need a Windows CD, all the hardware drivers from the manufacturers website, and a good chunk of time to do a manual reinstall of windows.

If you or the person who originally bought the laptop has the Windows XP CD that came with the laptop then just put that in and install Windows.

Is it an HP? if so hitting f11 during the beggining of bootup will bring up the restore "feature" of the harddrive to reinstall windows.
Otherwise you need to either find the restore disk for it or obtain a windows disk.

Ok did he give you the recovery disk for it? if he did then you can use that and reformat the drive on it.
If you go into safe mode. (by starting the computer and keep pressing the F8 key until you get a window with the option to go into safe mode) from there you go to User Accounts and reset the administrator's password .

you need to reformat your laptop.
you may need a windows cd.
drivers for your video card, motherboard, and sound.
installer like you fav software and updates.
first if your family member might want to back up the file ask em so. after having a back up its time to rip all the data.
insert windows xp cd and restart. it will boot from cd and install windows xp. after installing xp, insert the driver cd install necessary software like nvidia for video card and the like. then install you fav software and ready to go.
the above process approximately takes 2hrs.
